8 Helpful Tips for Coming to Canada as a student

This article is available to download in PDF.

There are over 300,000 international students studying in Canada.

Individuals who study in Canada receive top-quality and internationally respected education, while the cost of tuition and living fees in Canada are generally lower than in other developed countries.

Benefits of Studying in Canada

While studying in Canada, international students may also:

  • Work for up to 20 hours per week while in school, and on a full-time basis during school breaks;
  • Stay in Canada to gain work experience once academic program is successfully completed;
  • Bring accompanying spouse to Canada;
  • Bring minor children to study in Canada for free or at the same rate that Canadians pay;
  • Stay in Canada permanently as a permanent resident either through a Provincial Nominee Program or through the Express Entry immigration selection system; and
  • Use the time spent in Canada as an international student to obtain Canadian citizenship

A pathway for international students to Canadian permanent residency

  1. Finding a school is the first step in the process of becoming a student in Canada. Canadian schools can accommodate all interests and backgrounds.
  2. Once you have gained admission to a Canadian educational institution, you may be required to apply for a study permit.
  3. Once you have completed your studies at an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, which allows you to work in Canada.
  4. Completing your studies in Canada is a great way to set yourself on the road to obtaining permanent residence in Canada. Both the Federal Government and various Provincial Governments have created specific pathways for individuals, who have studied in Canada, to permanent residence.

Some helpful tips

  1. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION – Be diligent in selecting your educational institution to ensure it is a quality institution. Try to choose a public university or college, as they will qualify for a work on campus or a post-graduate work permit; private institutions mostly do not qualify.
  2. LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE – Obtain a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution in order to submit an application for a study permit. To avoid delays, make sure that your letter of acceptance includes all of the required information.
  3. A STUDY PLAN – It is always a good idea to include a Motivation Letter or a Study Plan with your application package that generally explains your goals and how your study plan fits into your academic and career plans.
  4. FINANCIAL RESOURCES – Showing sufficient financial resources is a key aspect of a successful study permit application. At a minimum, you have to show you have enough funds for your first year of studies (min. $10,000 for a single person, in addition to tuition fees).
  5. TIES TO HOME COUNTRY – Take time to think about any connection you have to your home country and provide some evidence of this in your study permit application. It is a critical component for success. Include documents showing family ties, assets and commitments in a home country.
  6. FAMILY SUPPORT – If you have family that is willing to support you, ask your family member for a sworn affidavit that they are your family member (e.g., parent, uncle, etc.), and will support you during your studies; also, provide financial documents of that family member.
  7. CRIMINAL & HEALTH CHECK – Have a clean criminal/police record and be in good health. Applicants with a criminal background, or who pose a risk to Canadian security, may be refused a study permit. You may be asked to supply a Police Clearance Certificate and/or to complete a medical examination.
  8. POST-GRADUATION WORK – If you’re interested in using your Canadian work experience after your education to obtain permanent residence, one of the most important things is to make sure that you’re getting high-skilled work experience after your graduation.
