Earlier this month, Canada invited H-1B visa holders from the U.S. to apply for an open work permit. Sobirov recognized the initiative’s potential impact, stating, “The overall tech ecosystem in Canada will become richer and more vibrant with the influx of new talent.” Following this progressive move, the Canadian government achieved a maximum of 10,000 applications within 48 hours. Such rapid response underscores the eagerness of tech professionals to expand their horizons and contribute to Canada’s flourishing tech sector.

Sobirov also discussed Canada’s various immigration programs aimed at hiring foreign workers in Canada. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) recently ranked Canada as the most attractive destination for immigrant entrepreneurs in 2023. Sobirov’s remarks echo this sentiment, highlighting the country’s robust tech ecosystem and welcoming immigration policies.

In addition to the H-1B initiative, Canada is reaching out to digital nomads with a focus on global tech talent. Previous Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has announced a program that welcomes international workers to live and work in Canada for up to six months, with the potential for longer stays if a job offer is made. Sobirov praised this initiative, emphasizing its potential to bring new talent to the country and promote permanent residency.

HR practitioners also play a crucial role in recruiting top tech talent, as noted by Sobirov. He advises HR professionals to focus on the overall package they can offer, such as Canada’s publicly funded healthcare system, laws protecting employees, and long-term growth opportunities.

Sobirov continues to lend his expertise to emerging discussions on Canada’s tech talent acquisition strategies. He is committed to navigating the evolving landscape of global tech talent, advocating for inclusive and supportive immigration policies that benefit both professionals and the Canadian tech industry.
