Vietnamese IT Manager Moves to Canada by Purchasing a Franchise.

Published: January 19, 2022 Updated: October 14, 2024

From Vietnam to Canada with a Purchase of a Franchise

A Vietnamese IT department manager with over 10 years of experience contacted us to advise him on purchasing a franchise in Canada. The Client’s budget was between CAD $300,000 and CAD $350,000. The main business immigration priorities were as follows:

  • locate an appropriate franchise opportunity in Canada with enough customer traffic and local product demand;
  • use Client’s previous management skills for business development;
  • the Client wanted to immigrate to Canada in 2021; and
  • the Client wanted to bring his family (a spouse and 2 children) to Canada with him.

After assessing and researching possible franchise options, our business immigration lawyers proposed various franchise opportunities to our Client. The Client decided to pursue a franchise opportunity in Ottawa, Ontario where he would take over existing operations in September 2021

The Timeline of the Case

In order to be eligible for a suitable business immigration pathway, our Client invested in purchasing the Ottawa-based franchise. Through such investment, our Client and his spouse became eligible for work permits. Their children became eligible for student visas and study permits. The Client signed a Letter of Intent in April 2021 and we assisted him to incorporate his Canadian business in Ontario on May 10, 2021.

After the investment, our business immigration lawyers submitted a visa application under the C11 program to the Canadian Visa Office in Ho Chi Minh City on June 7, 2021. The medical examination request was made on July 19, 2021. The Client underwent significant difficulties completing the medical exams due to the pandemic lockdown in Vietnam. We helped him request an extension of the medical exam deadlines which was kindly granted by the Visa Office.

The Client’s Work Permit application was eventually approved on October 18, 2021. The Client and his family arrived in Canada on December 1, 2021, just enough time to settle down and welcome the new year in a new country!

Lessons Learned from this Case

Many foreign entrepreneurs tend to overlook franchise immigration options in Canada. However, this option provides many benefits for business immigration, some of which are listed below.

  • Franchised businesses usually have a higher success rate and lower risks of failure;
  • Franchise owners can skip the startup stage. Once you are granted authorization to work in Canada, your company can start generating revenue immediately;
  • Franchise locations do not have to build up their brand as the franchisor has already done so for the franchisees;
  • Franchise owners and their employees receive adequate training and are equipped with the necessary knowledge about the business and how to manage it;
  • Newcomers don’t know the Canadian market, and therefore, obtaining support from an established franchise organization about marketing and advertising is the best strategy to increase business volume; and
  • Being part of a franchise will increase your business’ purchasing power which means you can purchase a large amount of inventory at a lower cost.
